Hoping to Help 10 Reach Home

The project if approved would provide 10 one-bedroom tiny homes, that are expected to rent for $780 per month including utilities. The homes will be between 288-320 sq. ft. The development would expand affordable rental housing options, and provide separate homes for 10 individuals, or couples, in a community setting. The unique thing about tiny homes, is the shared common outside space, providing room for porches, gardens, trees, and lawns.

The community setting encourages people to get to know the people that are their neighbours, making connections that can last a lifetime. We realize that this project will only help a few people, but it will open up the possibility of more communities that can help more people find housing they can afford.

This could be one of the first Micro-home pocket neighbourhoods in Ontario!  It’s also a new option for housing and an alternative model moving forward.  If we are to reach the amount of housing needed with the continued growing population as well as more and more being priced out of the stock that is available, we need to consider this as part of the solution.  Tiny homes are not for everyone, but for those that need a warm, safe and dignified place to call home, we hope TTA can help!

We’re excited to partner with local builders, developers, municipalities and the Province to create a pilot pocket community or neighbourhood in our region within the next two years.

These micro-layout neighbourhoods will be a game-changer for both urban and suburban areas looking to minimize a development footprint, maximize community spirit and see all those in need find deeper affordable housing.

Tiny Home Studies for Canada

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Tiny homes, also known as tiny houses or micro homes, are a type of alternative housing that has gained popularity in recent years as a potential solution to the affordable housing crisis. While there is no definitive data on the impact of tiny homes on the affordable housing crisis in Canada, there are a few studies and reports that provide some insight into their potential benefits and limitations.

One study published in the Journal of Urbanism: International Research on Placemaking and Urban Sustainability found that tiny homes can be a viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional housing for low-income households, particularly in urban areas where land is expensive and scarce. The study analyzed the cost of building and operating a tiny home in the city of Vancouver, and found that it was significantly cheaper than renting or owning a traditional home.

In 2018, BC Housing, Light House and the BC Tiny House Collective began exploring this topic more thoroughly in hopes that this research could advance knowledge, and pave a way forward for municipal governments, industry, future homeowners, and the public to better understand this form and the feasibility of tiny houses. Read full repost here.

Another report by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) examined the potential of tiny homes as a form of affordable housing in Canada. The report found that tiny homes can be a cost-effective option for certain groups, such as first-time homebuyers, seniors, and single-person households, but that they may not be suitable for families with children or those with mobility issues due to their small size. The report also noted that tiny homes could be subject to the same zoning and building regulations as traditional homes, which can limit their availability in some areas.

Overall, it seems that tiny homes may have the potential to help address the affordable housing crisis in Canada, but they are likely to be most effective as part of a larger, more comprehensive housing strategy that includes a range of options for different income levels and household types.
